Department of Defense ends the era of relative tolerance in the army

Military men have been proudly serving their country for centuries. As times passed and the LGBTQ community has formed in the US, queer people started joining the army to make their valuable contribution. There were different times for gay men in service: from a total ban to relatively recently established protections. The situation with of acceptance of LGBTQ community members has also varied from base to base, with some gay men still preferring to be closeted. Despite all the difficulties, gay military men served proudly all the times and were proud of who they are.

For the LGBTQ community at large, Rainbow Flag has been a symbol of unity and hope for a better future for quite a while. Here too, military gays were in line with the community, and Pride Flags have waved many bases across the country. It has been so up to recently. However, the situation is about to change dramatically. Not only Rainbow Flags have been banned from displaying at military bases but also all Department of Defense workplaces, and events (including Pride Parades) DOD members are participating. “The flags we fly must accord with the military imperatives of good order and discipline, treating all our people with dignity and respect, and rejecting divisive symbols,” rewards the statement of Mark Esper, Defense Secretary.

As the news came, viral LGBTQ community and allies have been just shocked.

“Banning the Rainbow Pride Flag will have the opposite effect of the policy’s intended purpose of improving morale, cohesion, and readiness,” as Dudy Coots from DOD Pride.

The decision will definitely have a long-lasting devastating effect for the LGBTQ community in general and the LGBTQ military in particular. With the community being severely hit by the continuing pandemic, that is probably not the best time for an additional blow unless the goal is to downgrade LGBTQ people nationwide.

On top of that, it is also crucial to realize heading to the November 2020 Presidential elections. With that in mind, it can be assumed for some things made on purpose. LGBTQ. All the hopes of LGBTQ people are with the Democratic nominee clearly voicing out more equality, diversity, and inclusion of the American society. Moreover, the decision regarding banning Pride Flag came together with that of Confederation. That is how unnecessary parallels are being made, pretending Pride Flags divide people while, in reality, bringing the community together. Moreover, it can be deduced for LGBTQ people rising a rebellion against existing order while just fighting for equal rights and opportunities.
